How it works
Your risk is your balance times the percentage you are willing to lose, say 1%. The distance from entry to stop is how far price can go against you.
Position size is your risk divided by that distance plus the fees you pay to get in and out. Counting fees means a stopped-out trade loses what you planned, not a little more.
For forex, the distance is counted in pips, and each pip on a standard lot of 100,000 units is worth a fixed amount of the quote currency, converted to your account currency.
Worked example
A $5,000 account risking 1% can lose $50.
Long at 2,450 with a stop at 2,410 is a 40 point stop.
A 0.055% taker fee on entry and exit adds 2.673 per coin.
50 ÷ 42.673 = 1.1717 coins, worth about $2,871.
At 10x leverage that ties up $287 of margin.
Questions
Does leverage change my risk?
No. Your stop and your position size set the risk. Leverage only changes how much margin the position ties up.
Why count fees?
On a tight stop, entry and exit fees can be a large share of the loss. Leave them out and every stopped-out trade loses more than you planned.
My forex pair is not quoted in USD. What do I enter?
Enter how many US dollars one unit of the quote currency is worth. The calculator does not fetch live rates, so nothing you type leaves this page.
Do this sum on every trade
Quanlio does it for every trade you log, then shows what breaking the rule cost you. The free tier is a full journal.
